MTG — What To Do If You Have A Flat Tyre In London
Roadside Safety Guide

Flat Tyre In London? six steps that keep you safe — and get you moving again.

A flat tyre, puncture or blowout doesn't have to ruin your day — but the first few minutes matter. Follow these six safety steps drawn from our mobile fitters' real London callouts to stay safe, protect your vehicle and minimise downtime.

If you are on a motorway hard shoulder: exit the vehicle on the passenger side, move behind the safety barrier, and call 999 if you feel unsafe before calling us.
First Reaction

Stay Calm. Slow Down Gradually.

Your instinct will be to brake hard — don't. Sudden braking with a flat tyre can cause loss of control, especially at speed. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands and ease off the accelerator.

Do
  • Hold the wheel steady with both hands
  • Ease off the accelerator gradually
Don't
  • Slam the brakes
  • Swerve to change lane suddenly
Find Safety

Move To A Safe Location.

On a London road, head for the nearest layby, side street or car park. On a motorway, the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area is the only safe stopping point. Never attempt to change a tyre in a live lane.

Safe Spots
  • Laybys, side streets, car parks
  • Hard shoulder or motorway refuge area
Avoid
  • Live motorway lanes
  • Bends, junctions, red routes
Be Visible

Hazards On. Exit Safely.

Switch on hazard warning lights the moment you've stopped. Exit on the side away from traffic — usually the passenger side. On a motorway, move behind the safety barrier and stay there.

Do
  • Hazard lights on immediately
  • Exit on the kerb / passenger side
Don't
  • Stand on the traffic side of the car
  • Place a warning triangle on a motorway
Assess

Check The Damage. Don't Drive On It.

Identify whether it's a slow puncture, sidewall damage or full blowout. Driving on a flat tyre — even a short distance — can destroy the rim, suspension components and TPMS sensors. The repair bill multiplies fast.

Check For
  • Embedded nail or screw
  • Sidewall bulges or splits
Never
  • Drive on a fully flat tyre
  • Inflate a tyre with sidewall damage
Call For Help

Call Mobile Tyre Giant.

Phone 020 8090 1010 or send your location via WhatsApp. Have your tyre size to hand — it's printed on the sidewall (e.g. 225/45 R17). We'll confirm an ETA and dispatch the nearest van immediately, day or night.

Have Ready
  • Your postcode or pinned location
  • Tyre size (printed on sidewall)
Don't
  • Wait for a recovery truck
  • Try to drive to a garage
Wait Safely

Stay Safe. We'll Be With You Soon.

Keep hazard lights on. Stay behind a safety barrier if on a motorway, or well away from traffic on a road. Our technician will arrive, fit a replacement tyre on-site, balance the wheel, torque-check it and reset your TPMS before leaving.

Do
  • Stay behind barriers or off the road
  • Watch for our ETA confirmation
Don't
  • Stand near live traffic
  • Attempt repairs alone roadside
Stuck Right Now? Don't Wait.
Call our 24/7 London dispatch team or share your location on WhatsApp. We'll confirm an ETA in under 2 minutes and have a fitter en route to you.
MTG — Tyre Safety & UK Legal Compliance
UK Tyre Law · Safety Guide

Tyre Safety & UK Legal Compliance what every London driver must know in 2026.

Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle touching the road. UK law sets strict minimum standards — and the penalties for ignoring them are severe. Over 190 people are killed or seriously injured every year in incidents related to defective tyres. This guide covers everything London drivers need to know: the 1.6mm law, MOT requirements, TPMS rules, sidewall damage and when to replace.

Think your tyres might be borderline? Don't risk an MOT failure or a £2,500 fine. Call us and we'll check your tread depth at your location — no charge, no obligation.
The Most Important Number In UK Tyre Law

The 1.6mm Legal Minimum

UK law (Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations 1986) requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the entire circumference. Not just one spot — the full tyre must meet this across its widest section.

Safety experts at the RAC, TyreSafe and the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents recommend replacing at 3mm — because wet braking distance increases dramatically below this depth. From 50mph in the wet, a tyre at 1.6mm stops 8+ metres longer than one at 3mm. That's two car lengths.

The penalty: Up to £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per illegal tyre. Four illegal tyres = up to £10,000 and 12 points — an instant driving ban under totting-up rules.
Tread Depth Reference Guide

MOT Rules

MOT Tyre Requirements

Any tyre below 1.6mm tread depth is an automatic MOT failure. Sidewall bulges, cuts or exposed cords are classed as a "Dangerous" failure — the most serious MOT category, meaning the car is illegal to drive immediately. Even a tyre at 1.7mm may receive an advisory and fail the following year.

Over 2 million MOT failures per year are caused by tyre defects
TPMS Law

TPMS — Tyre Pressure Sensors

All new cars sold in the UK since November 2014 must be fitted with a working TPMS. TPMS checks were added to the MOT test in January 2015. A malfunctioning warning light — whether due to a faulty sensor, dead battery or missing component — is classed as a Major MOT fault and results in a fail.

TPMS light on = at least one tyre 25% below recommended pressure
Sidewall Damage

Cuts, Bulges & Illegal Damage

UK law prohibits driving on tyres with deep cuts over 25mm or 10% of the section width, sidewall bulges, blisters or exposed cords and fabric. A bulge means the internal structure has failed — the tyre can blow out at any time. Do not drive on a bulging tyre. It cannot be repaired — replacement is the only safe option.

Sidewall damage cannot be legally repaired — always requires replacement
Tyre Age

How Old Are Your Tyres?

Every tyre has a DOT code stamped on the sidewall — the last four digits show the week and year of manufacture (e.g. 2623 = 26th week of 2023). Industry guidance recommends replacing tyres older than 5 years even with good tread. Rubber degrades and hardens over time, reducing grip and increasing blowout risk regardless of appearance.

Replace any tyre with a manufacture date over 5 years old

The 20p Test — Check Your Tread In 10 Seconds

No depth gauge? A 20p coin works. The outer rim of a 20p coin is approximately 2mm wide — just above the recommended 3mm replacement threshold. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread groove, your tyres are approaching or below the legal limit.

1Insert a 20p coin into the tread groove
2Push it fully into the groove
3Check the outer band of the coin
Band hidden — tread above 2mm ✓
Band visible — replace now ✗
Unsure If Your Tyres Are Legal? We'll Check.
Failed the 20p test, got a TPMS warning, or just unsure? Call us and we'll come to you — tread depth check, sidewall inspection and pressure check at your location. No garage visit needed.

Where Others Decline. we turn up — and finish the job.

London tyre work isn't fitting a wheel in a workshop. It's reaching a residents' bay in Westminster, a Tesla in a Q-Park sub-level, a black cab between fares at Heathrow, or a Porsche on a private estate. These are the situations we're built for — and the reason London drivers keep coming back.

How quickly can you reach me in London?
Typical response times across London are 20–35 minutes. Central London (Zones 1–2) is fastest at 20–25 minutes. Inner London is 20–30 minutes, and Outer London plus the M25 corridor is typically 25–35 minutes. Exact ETA is confirmed when you call.
Do you operate inside the ULEZ and Congestion Charge zones?
Yes. Our mobile fleet is ULEZ-compliant and we operate inside both the ULEZ and Congestion Charge zones every day. We come directly to your location — including residents' parking bays, hotel forecourts and office car parks — without you incurring any extra zone-related charges.
Can you fit tyres on the road or motorway in London?
Yes. We cover the M25 orbital, M1, M4, M11, M23 and major A-roads including the A406 North Circular, A205 South Circular, A2, A12, A13 and A40. We work at refuge areas, laybys, hard shoulders and service stations 24/7, with safety-trained roadside fitters.
Can you reach me at Heathrow, Gatwick or other London airports?
Yes. We cover Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted and Luton airports including drop-off lanes, hotel forecourts, long-stay car parks and surrounding road networks. Send your location and we'll dispatch the nearest van.
Do you carry my tyre size in stock on the van?
We carry 70,000+ tyres across budget, mid-range and premium brands — Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear and more — plus run-flats and EV-rated tyres. When you call with your tyre size, we'll confirm stock before dispatch.
What if I have a locking wheel nut and don't know the key code?
We carry specialist locking wheel nut removal tools that safely extract stuck, lost or seized nuts without damaging your alloys. After removing the nut, we fit your tyre in the same visit and supply a replacement locking set if needed.
Can you fit tyres in a multi-storey or underground car park in London?
Yes. Our vans are sized to enter most London multi-storey and underground car parks — Westfield, Selfridges, Q-Park, NCP and residential garages. If clearance is an issue, we'll meet you at the entrance and fit the tyre safely on the level.
Do you service black cab and PHV drivers?
Yes. We provide priority response for London's black cabs, Uber, Bolt, Free Now, Addison Lee and courier drivers — minimising downtime so your vehicle keeps earning. Fleet accounts available for operators with multiple vehicles.
Can you fit run-flat tyres and work on premium vehicles?
Yes. We specialise in run-flat fitting and work daily on Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, Bentley, Range Rover and other premium marques. Our vans carry alloy-safe equipment, EV-rated tooling and run-flat fitting machines.
How much does mobile tyre fitting in London cost?
Pricing depends on tyre brand, size and vehicle. We confirm the full quote — tyre cost, fitting, balancing and any extras — before dispatch. No hidden charges, no surprise call-out fees, no surge pricing at night or on weekends.
Do you operate at night and on bank holidays?
Yes — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year including Christmas and bank holidays. Emergency callouts answered immediately by real engineers, not an automated system.
Are your fitters insured and certified?
All Mobile Tyre Giant technicians are fully insured with public liability cover, trained on industry-standard fitting and balancing procedures, and equipped with alloy-protective tooling. Every job is torque-checked and the TPMS reset before we leave.
