Flat Tyre In London? six steps that keep you safe — and get you moving again.
A flat tyre, puncture or blowout doesn't have to ruin your day — but the first few minutes matter. Follow these six safety steps drawn from our mobile fitters' real London callouts to stay safe, protect your vehicle and minimise downtime.
Stay Calm. Slow Down Gradually.
Your instinct will be to brake hard — don't. Sudden braking with a flat tyre can cause loss of control, especially at speed. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands and ease off the accelerator.
- Hold the wheel steady with both hands
- Ease off the accelerator gradually
- Slam the brakes
- Swerve to change lane suddenly
Move To A Safe Location.
On a London road, head for the nearest layby, side street or car park. On a motorway, the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area is the only safe stopping point. Never attempt to change a tyre in a live lane.
- Laybys, side streets, car parks
- Hard shoulder or motorway refuge area
- Live motorway lanes
- Bends, junctions, red routes
Hazards On. Exit Safely.
Switch on hazard warning lights the moment you've stopped. Exit on the side away from traffic — usually the passenger side. On a motorway, move behind the safety barrier and stay there.
- Hazard lights on immediately
- Exit on the kerb / passenger side
- Stand on the traffic side of the car
- Place a warning triangle on a motorway
Check The Damage. Don't Drive On It.
Identify whether it's a slow puncture, sidewall damage or full blowout. Driving on a flat tyre — even a short distance — can destroy the rim, suspension components and TPMS sensors. The repair bill multiplies fast.
- Embedded nail or screw
- Sidewall bulges or splits
- Drive on a fully flat tyre
- Inflate a tyre with sidewall damage
Call Mobile Tyre Giant.
Phone 020 8090 1010 or send your location via WhatsApp. Have your tyre size to hand — it's printed on the sidewall (e.g. 225/45 R17). We'll confirm an ETA and dispatch the nearest van immediately, day or night.
- Your postcode or pinned location
- Tyre size (printed on sidewall)
- Wait for a recovery truck
- Try to drive to a garage
Stay Safe. We'll Be With You Soon.
Keep hazard lights on. Stay behind a safety barrier if on a motorway, or well away from traffic on a road. Our technician will arrive, fit a replacement tyre on-site, balance the wheel, torque-check it and reset your TPMS before leaving.
- Stay behind barriers or off the road
- Watch for our ETA confirmation
- Stand near live traffic
- Attempt repairs alone roadside
Tyre Safety & UK Legal Compliance what every London driver must know in 2026.
Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle touching the road. UK law sets strict minimum standards — and the penalties for ignoring them are severe. Over 190 people are killed or seriously injured every year in incidents related to defective tyres. This guide covers everything London drivers need to know: the 1.6mm law, MOT requirements, TPMS rules, sidewall damage and when to replace.
The 1.6mm Legal Minimum
UK law (Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations 1986) requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the entire circumference. Not just one spot — the full tyre must meet this across its widest section.
Safety experts at the RAC, TyreSafe and the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents recommend replacing at 3mm — because wet braking distance increases dramatically below this depth. From 50mph in the wet, a tyre at 1.6mm stops 8+ metres longer than one at 3mm. That's two car lengths.
MOT Tyre Requirements
Any tyre below 1.6mm tread depth is an automatic MOT failure. Sidewall bulges, cuts or exposed cords are classed as a "Dangerous" failure — the most serious MOT category, meaning the car is illegal to drive immediately. Even a tyre at 1.7mm may receive an advisory and fail the following year.
TPMS — Tyre Pressure Sensors
All new cars sold in the UK since November 2014 must be fitted with a working TPMS. TPMS checks were added to the MOT test in January 2015. A malfunctioning warning light — whether due to a faulty sensor, dead battery or missing component — is classed as a Major MOT fault and results in a fail.
Cuts, Bulges & Illegal Damage
UK law prohibits driving on tyres with deep cuts over 25mm or 10% of the section width, sidewall bulges, blisters or exposed cords and fabric. A bulge means the internal structure has failed — the tyre can blow out at any time. Do not drive on a bulging tyre. It cannot be repaired — replacement is the only safe option.
How Old Are Your Tyres?
Every tyre has a DOT code stamped on the sidewall — the last four digits show the week and year of manufacture (e.g. 2623 = 26th week of 2023). Industry guidance recommends replacing tyres older than 5 years even with good tread. Rubber degrades and hardens over time, reducing grip and increasing blowout risk regardless of appearance.
The 20p Test — Check Your Tread In 10 Seconds
No depth gauge? A 20p coin works. The outer rim of a 20p coin is approximately 2mm wide — just above the recommended 3mm replacement threshold. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread groove, your tyres are approaching or below the legal limit.
Where Others Decline. we turn up — and finish the job.
London tyre work isn't fitting a wheel in a workshop. It's reaching a residents' bay in Westminster, a Tesla in a Q-Park sub-level, a black cab between fares at Heathrow, or a Porsche on a private estate. These are the situations we're built for — and the reason London drivers keep coming back.
Multi-Storey & Underground Car Parks
Modern car parks weren't designed for recovery trucks. Our mobile vans are sized to enter the vast majority of London multi-storey, underground and residents' garages — fitting tyres exactly where your car is parked, on the level, without moving the vehicle.
PHV, Black Cab & Courier Priority
Every hour off the road costs PHV and cab drivers real income. We run a priority lane for London's professional drivers — dispatched faster, fitted with high-mileage rated tyres, and back earning the same shift. Fleet accounts available for operators with multiple vehicles.
EV, Run-Flat & Premium Marques
EVs and premium vehicles demand specific tooling — HV-safe lift points, EV-rated torque specs, run-flat fitting machines and alloy-protective equipment. Our technicians are trained on manufacturer-specific fitting procedures and reset all driver-assistance systems before they leave.
Residents' Bays & Restricted Streets
Westminster, Camden, Kensington and Islington run some of the strictest residents'-parking regimes in the UK. We come to your permit bay, controlled street or red route — fit the tyre in place, and leave the vehicle exactly where you left it — legally parked, fully drivable.
Airport & Long-Stay Coverage
A flat tyre on the way to a flight — or back at long-stay after a fortnight away — is the single most stressful breakdown a London driver can have. We cover every London airport route, hotel forecourt and long-stay car park, with priority response for time-critical departures.
